I am from a small town in West Virginia, but I knew from a young age I wanted to see more of the world. I fell in love with Paris while taking seventh grade French and I became obsessed with finding my way there. It took me awhile. I went to the Wharton School with the intention of becoming a finance mogul, but I soon learned finance was not for me. I worked for a while and then went to graduate school at Columbia. I really just wanted to hide out in a socially acceptable (but expensive) way while I figured out what I wanted to do with my life.
The summer after my first year in graduate school, I finally lived my dream of going to Paris. I only had time to visit for three days. I was nervous for so many reasons. Paris had been the city of my dreams since I was 12 years old. I put it high on a pedestal and I wasn’t sure if the reality of the city would be anything like the city that I had dreamed of. I was also nervous because I was going alone.
When I get nervous or anxious, I cope with it by compiling as much information about whatever I am nervous about. I wanted my first trip to Paris to be perfect, so I spent months planning. I read what felt like thousands of reviews and blogs because I could never find everything I needed in one place. I only had three days in Paris and I wanted to see as much as possible, while still having somewhat of an authentic experience.
On my trip I met several travelers from around the world who had the same dilemma. We all had limited time and we were overwhelmed with deciding how to fill it. In the end, my goal was to find a balance between being a tourist and pretending to be a local. There is so much to Paris and every other great city I have visited, that I could spend months there and still not experience it all. Like most people, I don't have the luxury of spending several months traveling. School, work, and family obligations limit the amount of time I can spend traveling. When I do travel, I want to make the most of it. I wanted to start Roam in a Day to share my thoughts and to help others to have the most enriching travel experience possible, especially when you only have a short amount of time. I wanted to share all of the places I have been able to Roam in a Day – Whitney
